Will you keep this safe for me?

Ah.

[ Glancing at the plush in Breezy's arms ]

Well now I must admit I'm a little jealous.

I can't help myself. You're one of the few things that put my mind at ease on this ship.

Do you need something else to keep your mind off it?

I wish for you to go home, too.

[ Still running his hand through Breezy's hair ]

There once was a fairy who lived in a spring. A fairy made out of the spring's water. One day she heard a young boy crying outside of her spring. She went to the water's edge to investigate and gently patted the boy on his head. The boy asked if the fairy could make his wish come true, and because she could not speak, she could only nod. The boy was overjoyed. And the fairy, who had not come in contact with another living being for many years, felt a warmth and connection to the world around her.

They did for a time. And they grew very close. But the spring fairy did not understand the human concept of love and knew that the distance between a fairy and a human were great. So when he grew older, though she continued to sing from the depths of the spring, she would not appear, hoping that the now young man would move on.

He did miss her terribly, visiting the spring well until his elderly years. But even so, he was a well loved figure in the community. The stories he told were beloved by the children. His generosity and kindness did not fade with age or with that loneliness. In his later years, sometimes he even doubted what happened in his youth.

Until they did meet again, much later in life.

She wore a mortal guise. And even in this guise, he recognized her.

Beings made of water are not the same as those made of the earth or the nature. Nor are they like the wind who remember every secret spoken into the air. Memories pass through water and disperse into the greater ocean, collected. So the longer she stayed away from the boy, the less she was able to remember him.

Until a Traveler from another world was able to nudge her in the right direction. Once she saw him, all the memories came flooding back as if they had always been there. They greeted each other as long lost friends and lovers even though decades had passed.

If she chooses to remain a spring fairy, then yes it will slip from her memory to add to the greater whole.

But their love story had already become somewhat of a local legend in their small village.

Someone always will. The ripples we leave in other people's hearts echo farther than we have the ability to predict.

Of course it is. But it is also the greatest honor one can have — to cherish those that we love. And let them live through us — in our hearts and in our actions — for the rest of our days.
